I found this piece at an estate sale in Connecticut. The previous owner brought this back from a trip to Spain. It was part of a large outdoor carving in front of an old church. I’m not sure what type of wood was used but it’s very heavy. It’s approximately 12″ x 12″ x 5 and weighs 6 pounds. Let me know if you have any questions.

This mid to late 18th century fellow is most likely German or Austrian and is richly carved from linden with oustanding facial features and moppy hair. Measuring 8 5/8″ tall x 8 1/2″ wide x 3 1/2 deep, the face suggests a child’s portrait and the pigmentation appears to be of the period for the most part. The symmetrically arrayed wings boast much original gold leaf (on red bole/gesso ground) with areas of wear and dull gold indicating later bronze powder over gilding/touch-up. The wood is in very good condition (minimal or no worming) and there is some paint/gesso loss in his hair on top. He has been displayed for years and is dusty.

A Maiden and her Robes, Lovely Wooden Sculpture. Perhaps it was part of a religious group, or perhaps it was conceived as a standalone piece. In any case, it’s an affecting work from 18th century Europe. Dimensions, including the (later) stand, are about 8.75 inches high by 3 inches wide. The left hand is missing, as is the right foot. Condition is otherwise quite good all around, with an attractive, fresh appearance. There is a lot of pleasure to be had in contemplating this work.

This middle 1700’s northern Italian hand carved wooden boy putto is the picture of robust, plump good health with dimples, a shock of golden blonde hair and rosey cheeks. Measuring 12 1/2″ tall x 6″ wide on his 1 3/4″ tall x 4 1/4″ fauz marble painted base, the artist has chosen a dynamic contraposto pose with one foot elevated and resting on a human skull. The tradition of putti/young children being juxtaposed with human skulls as a reminder of the sin of vanity or the inevitability of death is a rich one reaching its peak in paintings and sculpture in northern Italy and the low countries in the middle 1600’s-middle 1700’s. This little fellow with wonderfully preserved original polychrome (stable) dates from the latter peiod and is filled with life despite his choice of foot rest. The elbow joint of his proper right arm is loose with old glue residue and will need a drop of glue when you receive him… Although the arm stays in place just as is. You will note several missing fingers or parts of fingers and notable, but not objectionable wear from age. The base may not be original… But is at least 150 years old judging by the quality of finish and the natural shrinkage in the wood.
