Jose J Pinal Hand Carved Wooden Mexican Aztec Warrior Bookend Carving Eagle. 10.5″ tall on a base that is about 3.75″ x 3.75. This piece is a lovely example of folk art by Mexican artist, Jose Pinal. He was known as the Mexican Picasso. Sixties retro tiki mid century modernists ambience. This wooden, hand-carved bust features the proud head of a Mayan or Aztec warrior complete with headdress and striking profile. This amazing piece is carved out of a single piece of wood. It has a rich, amber color and a bit of natural graining to give it a unique look. Created and signed by J. Pinal in Mexico for tourists during the Sixties. This is a full 3d relief carving of the famous Aztec Calendar or Sunstone – one of our most complicated carvings so far. It is done in plywood, colored with stains, and finished with transparent varnish. Thickens: 27 to 40 mm plywood/beech wood. COLOR AND SIZE VARIATIONS ARE AVAILABLE. (please contact me for details). The Aztec sun stone (Spanish: Piedra del Sol) is a late post-classic Mexica sculpture housed in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City and is perhaps the most famous work of Aztec sculpture. Shortly after the Spanish conquest, the monolithic sculpture was buried in the Zócalo, the main square of Mexico City. It was rediscovered on 17 December 1790 during repairs on the Mexico City Cathedral. Following its rediscovery, the sunstone was mounted on an exterior wall of the cathedral, where it remained until 1885. Early scholars initially thought that the stone was carved in the 1470s, though modern research suggests that it was carved sometime between 1502 and 1521.
