Offered here is a rare matched pair of hand-carved and polychrome painted wooden figures by listed American folk artist Adrian R. Both figures are signed “ARW” on the underside of the feet and date to approximately the 1920s-1930s, placing them among his earlier known works. The pair depicts a man and a woman rendered in Woodall’s distinctive faceted carving style. Both figures stand approximately 6.5 inches tall and display exceptional detail including individually carved fingers and expressive, dignified faces. The pair displays particularly well together, with a clear visual relationship and balance. Original dry polychrome paint surface throughout. Condition is excellent for age with normal antique wear consistent with approximately 100 years of careful storage. These figures have been in the same Kentucky family for decades, inherited from a great aunt who knew Woodall personally. He worked on her family’s farm as a young man, and the figures were acquired directly from the artist during his lifetime. This direct, personal provenance connecting the figures to the artist is exceptionally rare. Adrian Woodall was a self-taught sculptor born in Christian County, Missouri. Originally an optometrist, he began carving professionally in 1927 and eventually relocated to Florida, where carving became his livelihood and he taught wood sculpture at Florida Southern College. 19TH CENTURY PAINTING / SCULPTURE. Approximately 13 ” By 4 ” CIRCA 1825 – 1850. This is one of those indescribable treasures that artists have left for posterity. Here, a piece of branch has been carved and sculpted by hand and then painted. The skill level is off the charts and the level of detail captured into the smallest space is truly remarkable! With this work the artist has kept the past alive. We can see the harbor and boats as they were almost two hundred years ago – simple craft with barely more than a sail and no motors or even steam vessels in sight! The tree is sculpted in relief and the artist was able to capture whole figures in the size of the head of a pin! The work is restful to look at. One senses this work was the patient joy of the artist, and this joy and appreciation of the moment and scenery has been captured forever! Two tiny holes to the wood where the work was probably hung well over a century ago. The signature uses old English script in use in the 18th and 19th centuries and we place an approximate date of the piece to 1825. This type of work is incredibly rare, most paintings of this kind and vintage simply haven’t made it to the 21st century. A marvelous acquisition for a fine art collector to display proudly! A Glorious 19th Century Treasure!

Offered here is a highly detailed hand carved wood sculpture of a Wild Boar attributed to the Oberammergau carving tradition and associated with the workshop or style of Anton Fischer of Oberammergau, one of the most famous wood-carving villages in the world. Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps has been renowned for its wood carving for over 500 years, with the craft documented as early as the early 1500s. These pieces are prized today for their fine hand craftsmanship and traditional Black Forest carving style. This sculpture is a beautifully carved example, showing a powerful wild boar with excellent anatomical detail and expressive carving. Pieces like this were typically carved individually by hand, making each example unique. Overall length: 8 inches. Height: approximately 7.5 inches. Base measures about 7.25″ x 3″. Weight: 427.8 grams. Hand carved solid wood. German Black Forest / Oberammergau folk art style. Please read carefully and review the photos. Unfortunately this piece has had several repairs to the legs and tail. The repairs were done fairly well overall, but they are visible and should be noted. The rear right leg is slightly glued a bit out of alignment toward the bottom. I took clear photos showing these areas so you can judge for yourself. Despite the repairs, it still displays very nicely and remains a wonderful example of traditional German wood carving. Please review all photos carefully as they are part of the description.
