A set of three sculptures; giant artist paintbrushes, carved wood with metal collars and multi-colored paint. The works are apparently unsigned but easily attributed to Livio de Marchi, Italian artist known for carved wood sculptures with a playful pop sensibility. Attributed to Livio de Marchi. Age and wear, some paint loss and damage to tips. Two are 46, ” one 41 1/2″. Livio De Marchi b. 1943 is an Italian sculptor also known as The Carpenter of Venice. Renowned for his whimsy, his monumental wooden creations merge craftsmanship with surreal fantasy. This is a giant, wooden, hand carved tiki I had commissioned from a tiki carver who lived down in the Florida Keys more than 20 years ago. It is massive – about 58″ tall (close to 5′) and about 12″ in diameter. The design, which is very warrior-like, is based on a tiki I got from the great California tiki carver and artist Bosko. I wasn’t happy with the tikis I was seeing for sale around Florida and wanted something more fierce and sinister looking so I brought this tiki I’d gotten from Bosko down to a roadside tiki carver who operated in the Keys and asked him to carve me one that looked like it. (he told me that after others saw the tiki he carved for me, it became a much requested version). Sadly, the well-known tiki carver who worked on the side of the road in the Keys passed away several years ago so these aren’t being made anymore. I’m not sure what kind of wood this is made out of – but it was obviously carved from a log indigenous to the Keys. The artist then varnished it so it has a nice, warm look to it. This has never been outside in the elements (but because it was varnished, it could be placed outdoors) so it’s in perfect condition (though it does have some minor cracks which are normal and inevitable when you carve tikis from actual logs – see the last pic showing the top of the tiki). It’s really a beautiful, one of a kind carving – perfect for your indoor tiki bar or perhaps outside around the pool. Personally, I’ve found it really hard to find large, fierce, sinister looking “warrior-type” tikis – most of the ones you see for sale have that happy-go-lucky Jimmy Buffet vibe going on. So if you want more of sinister vibe, grab this one. Due to the size and weight of this tiki (it’s quite heavy – I’d estimate it at 60-75 lbs – though you can easily move it by rolling it or using a hand-truck) this is local pick-up only. I’m trying to get rid of things not keep them. Note: I also have another hand-carved tiki done in the style of one from a Mark Ryden painting (it’s not quite as large or heavy) – get in touch if you’re interested in that one too.
